Does Casting Your Vote Means Voting Your Caste

Caste once again proved to be the major factor in determining the results of the elections in the five Indian states. The major part of the electoral arithmetic deals with the 'caste arithmetic'. This is slowly poisoning the democracy and there is a big need to address the nescience of caste arithmetic among the Indians.  .

Caste - Not a Haste:

Many electoral experts say that the caste politics is essential to lift the power of democracy. To an extent it has been the reason for the Indian democracy travelling so long. The book 'Modernity and Tradition ' says the caste politics have bought equity among the members of different castes by reducing their distinctions.

Considering the history of our country, this statement has its own merits. The upper caste domination in political powers, that was seen during the time after independence, has slowly declined, thanks to the evolution of numerous regional parties across the country. If one studies the overall picture of our country, the least developed states do not have a leader (or would have got a leader very late after independence) to have a strong voice at national level. Bihar is a good example that its leaders were audible at the only during the late 90's.

That doesn't mean that the fragmented blocks of leadership are the only way to raise the concerns. Good leaders are those who take into notice, even the pin drop sounds that arise from their pupil. But to the country's misfortune the number of such leaders is less than the sound produced by a pin drop.

Caste should not determine winnability:

In current scenario, the first parameter that determines the selection of candidate of a party is the caste. All permutations and combinations to derive the 'winnability' of the candidate revolves around the sole star called the caste. This  process of making the caste as the base, means the candidate is supposed to  concentrate more towards his own caste, shadowing the concerns of others. Being generous will win him the so called minority votes, but to keep the chair for himself , he chooses to be kind to his own people. These minorities are majority somewhere else but the different sufferers exist there too.

To address the concerns of these nugatory people, the parameter to judge the winnability must change from caste to performance .The voters must look beyond the blood and bone. The mindset, should change from 'Lets give him a chance' to 'Why does he deserve a chance?'. The answer will answer many concerns of our country.

Just because god and dog are made up of same letters they are not tantamount. Voting your caste blindly is not the successful casting of your votes. The success of our democracy lies in the choice of the blood you choose - the one who is ready to shed the blood for you and your country in the future  or the person who has been sharing the blood with you from the past.
